Stephen Fry in America: Fifty States and the Man Who Set Out to See Them All Review

Amazon.com knows me. With Magic Cookies it keeps track of

what I look at and buy, so it can suggest OTHER books for me to

buy. What a thoughtful company!

That's how I discovered the book, "Stephen Fry in

America."

"That's a familiar name," I thought, but who he was stayed

perched on the far edges of my mind, where the deer and the

antelope play.

And while I busied myself with other things, my brain was

flipping through its files, searching for "Stephen Fry." Right

in the middle of eating a coldcut sub, Eureka, it came

to me. Of course! Stephen Fry was half of "Fry and Laurie,"

that wonderful British comedy team of the 1980s and 1990s! Stephen Frye

went on to write this highly entertaining

book. His partner, Hugh Laurie, came to America to star in a

TV show called "House," and was never heard from again.

"Stephen Fry in America" isn't exactly a travel book. It's

more than that. Mr. Fry visits each state, avoiding the usual

tourist attractions. He holds up a mirror to ourselves in

this book full of wit and humor.

Best of all, Fry tells what he thinks of the people and

places. He talks with Morgan Freeman in Mississippi, joins

Zulus in a Mardi Gras march, drums with the Sioux Nation,

celebrates Halloween in Salem, goes to a club for failed

gangsters in Brooklyn.

He even tries his hand at some of their jobs. Lobstering

in Maine, for instance. He's amazed at the amount of hard work

it takes to get these aggressive crustaceans into the boat. And

his opinion of lobsters? "...simply giant marine insects. Huge

bugs in creepy armour. Look at a woodlouse and then at a

lobster. Cousins, surely?"

In West Virginia he joins workers at the Kanawha Eagle

Mine. When they're deep into the mine, he panics. "I am hating

this. I want to escape, NOW, right this minute please, but I am

too much of a coward to let anyone see what a coward I am...I

add miners to the list of people I tremendously admire but

would rather die than emulate."

In Wisconsin---"You should know by now that I love,

respect, venerate and adore most things American...so much here

is of abiding value, charm, beauty and quality. But not the

cheese...the most hideous orange melted gunk...with a processed

liquid substance which is closer to a polymer than a

foodstuff."

Montana is smaller than only Alaska, Texas and California.

Didn't know that.

Fry visits the Montana-Canadian border. Well, not all of

it; the border is 550 miles long. It's heavily policed, now.

In this fourth-largest state, he visits the biggest

landowner in America, aside from the federal government. He's

"an extraordinarily generous and, some would say, eccentric

philanthropist."

Fry's visit with Ted Turner is friendly and fascinating.

At the end of it, Fry writes, "A likeable, stylish individual

who seems to have got more pleasure from his money and done

more with it than most."

Tennessee---ah-ha! My home! Fry goes to Townsend to hear

bluegrass, which he's always loved. At the Rocky Branch Club,

he wanders "from room to room dizzy with delight."

He then goes to Memphis to see the famous (in Memphis,

anyway) ducks. At the end of this part, he writes, "Duck poo,

unpleasant as it is, has great appeal when compared with what

awaits me further north in the city of Knoxville."

W-E-L-L!! I turn the page, feeling personally insulted.

And there it is, in large letters---"CADAVERS!" He's writing

about the Body Farm!

It was not a pleasant visit for him. His descriptions are

very graphic. "For all my age and experience, there had still

been some sweet, small, shy flower of innocence inside me when

I arrived at the Body Farm. By the time I leave, it has gone

forever."

If memory serves me correctly, and half the time it does,

Fry deeply dislikes only one state, New Jersey. Sorry, Boss.

The words printed under "New Jersey" are "And so I find

myself driving into hell." That "Garden State" motto does not

fool him one bit.

He dislikes only one city, Waikiki. "What a horrible, what

a grotesque, what a SHATTERING disappointment. Of all the

unspeakably vile tourist hells I have ever visited, this has to

be one of the worst."

(Tell us how you REALLY feel, Mr. Fry!)

At the beginning of each state's section, there is a

sidebar called "KEY FACTS." State nickname, flower, bird, well-

known residents/natives. Under the last heading, for New

York State, he writes, "That would be unfair on the other

states. There are thousands." The "be unfair ON," rather than

"TO" the other states, is because Fry writes this book in

English-English. At the back of the book he lists 68 "American-

English" words for his British readers.

Fry, this funny fellow, ends the book by writing, "I loved

America before this trip and I love it now more than ever...I

met very few fools on my travels, save perhaps the British I

encountered who thought themselves naturally superior: I still

shiver with embarrassment at the memory of their imbecile

arrogance. America is not perfect, and I do not love Britain

any less for loving America more."

He loves us! And you'll love him and his book! It's good-

sized, with photographs on almost every page.

Stephen Fry in America: Fifty States and the Man Who Set Out to See Them All Overview

Britain's best-loved comic genius, Stephen Fry, turns his celebrated wit and insight to unearthing the real America as he travels across the continent in his chariot of Englishness, a black London cab.

Stephen Fry has always loved America. In fact, he came very close to being born here. His fascination for the country and its people sees him embarking on an epic journey across America, visiting each of its fifty states to discover how such a huge diversity of people, cultures, languages, and beliefs creates such a remarkable nation. Stephen starts his journey on the East Coast and zigzags across America, stopping in every state from Maine to Hawaii, talking to each state's hospitable citizens, listening to music, visiting landmarks, viewing small-town life and America's breathtaking landscapes, following wherever his curiosity leads him.

En route he discovers the South Side of Chicago with blues legend Buddy Guy, catches up with Morgan Freeman in Mississippi, strides around with Ted Turner on his Montana ranch, marches with Zulus in Mardi Gras in New Orleans, drums with the Sioux Nation in South Dakota, joins a Georgia family for Thanksgiving, "picks" with bluegrass hillbillies, and finds himself in a Tennessee garden full of dead bodies.

Whether in a club for failed gangsters in Brooklyn, New York (yes, those are real bullet holes), or celebrating Halloween in Salem, Massachusetts (is there anywhere better?), Stephen is welcomed by the people of America—mayors, sheriffs, newspaper editors, park rangers, teachers, and hoboes, bringing to life the oddities and splendors of each locale. A celebration of the magnificent and the eccentric, the beautiful and the strange, Stephen Fry in America is the author's homage to this extraordinary country.

Such a wonderful pleasure! - tallahasseelass - Tallahassee, FL USA
Stephen Frey has a charm in his writing that brings his wit in conversational format to the reader. I have laughed so in reading this book that others wondered what could possibly be so funny about travel in the United States. My only regret is that I did not meet Mr. Frey when he travelled to Florida as I would have welcomed the chance to show him around our state's capital city!

Know NOT America - Mark A. Zecca - Los Angeles
Urban redneck and low class snob came to mind when I read this book. Mr. Fry's take on the states is full of tired old stereotypes and cliches. He repeats the same old rhetoric that people who have ever drove through an interstate sums up a state in a paragraph. Take New Jersey where he shreds the state apart and reduces it to dumb class of Jersey boys and girls and describes how ugly it is. Sorry Mr. Fry you don't know New Jersey and it's beauty or it's people. New Jersey is per capita the richest state in the union. Princeton University is here among other prestigious institutions. I don't think that class of people would live there if it was such a terrible place to live. This book should not be taken seriously. I couldn't even donate this book so I put it in it's rightful place , THE TRASH.

In Fry I Trust - RealGrrl - Tulsa, OK
In 2008, the quintessential Englishman, Stephen Fry, traveled across the entire United States to experience what each individual state had to offer.
What I liked about this book is that Fry stayed away from popular sites e.g. Times Square, and instead chose to visit more colorful & interesting locales. To a non-American, it would probably seem like the states have their own flavor, but we do have a common ingredient that can be found across the entire nation & Fry usually was confronted with it when he read our state mottos, slogans, & even watched commercials all of which declare the unique attitude & culture of where he was at the moment. To the next state, it seemed to be repeat itself & Fry took it all in stride, seeming to enjoy it rather than ridicule it for all its worth. (I know I would have done it, given the chance.)

I'm only giving the book three stars as I thought each state's section was too short & yes, Fry predicted that Americans would be dissatisfied with their own state's portrayal which I will confirm that for me (as an Okie) that I was a bit disappointed with what he included. But maybe I'm just being cynical, after all he did show Okies as being charitable & enjoying the pastime of rodeo, which isn't a bad depiction in the least. Fry could have easily made a book about how there is more bad than good in the US & it would have been easy to do. It was nice to read a book filled with the more positive elements of our society: hardwork, community, indigenous cultures, & the ability to drive a car on the beach (well, two of them).

Bonuses: All of that trivia & history! Also, the beautiful photography & Fry's British wit & humoUr.

Frommer's Madrid Day by Day (Frommer's Day by Day - Pocket) Review

I have been traveling to Madrid for years on and off and know the city well. But I have struggled to find a decent guide that covers all the ground. Some, like Lonely Planet have good maps but are superficial on museums, culture and dreadful when it comes to restaurants. Others stress culture or eating out but are thin on practicalities.

This is the only book I have found which covered the ground. And it's down to the author who writes clearly and wittily, has good taste in food and hotels and is clearly a genuine authority on Spain rather than a person shipped in to do a quick job.

Great Price COOKBOOK: for $6.88

Diners, Drive-ins and Dives: An All-American Road Trip . . . with Recipes! (Food Network) Review

So far, I have tried 3 recipes from this book and they were all excellent! 1. American Chop Suey (The pasta sauce was so fricken licken good. I couldn't get enough of this sauce. The whole dish went well together. My favorite so far!) 2. Lobster Quesadillas (I didn't have lobster, so I used shrimp instead. Very good and yummy!). 3. Chorizo Garbage Plate (I just made this today and it was really good. Everything blended well together. I will be making this again!)

A lot of people complain that there are no pictures in this book. That is true, but most of the recipes are on youtube if you search for the restaurant. Don't type the recipe name. It won't come up. You have to type the restaurant. For example, if I wanted to search for "american chop suey" on youtube, I would search for the restaurant name: Red Arrow Diner.

Getting Out: Your Guide to Leaving America (Process Self-reliance Series) Review

This is an enjoyable read, filled with useful information, which will definitely get you thinking of the possibilities of moving outside the U.S.A. But be careful - a book such as this requires a nearly annual re-editing to remain current. Conditions change quickly, and some of the cost-of-living information for several countries may already be dated.

Take New Zealand, for example. From friends who recently emigrated there, I've learned that living costs have risen significantly since the first edition of this book came out. Also, it is not as easy to move there from America as the book seems to suggest, with a significant amount of pre-qualifying and red tape involved. If you aren't in an occupation currently in heavy demand, the NZ government may not want you moving there at all. My friends ARE enjoying their new life, however, and say that it was worth all the hassle.

Had enough?

Whether you find the government oppressive, the economy spiraling out of control, or if you simply want adventure, you’re not alone. In increasing numbers, the idea is talked about openly: Expatriate.

Over three hundred thousand Americans emigrate each year, and more than a million go to foreign lands for lengthy stays.

But picking up and moving to another country feels like a step into the void. Where to go? How to begin? What to do?

Volume 2 of the Process Self-Reliance Series, this smartly designed two-color guidebook walks you through the world of the expat: the reasons, the rules, the resources, and the tricks of the trade, along with compelling stories and expertise from expatriate Americans on every continent.

Getting Out shows you where you can most easily gain residence, citizenship, or work permits; where can you live for a fraction of the cost of where you’re living now; and what countries would be most compatible with your lifestyle, gender, age, or political beliefs.

So if you’ve had enough of what they’re selling here and want to take your life elsewhere—well, isn’t that the American way? At any rate, it’s not illegal. Not yet, anyway.

Great overview of things to consider and places to go - Ed - CHICAGO, Israel
This book was very helpful in providing easy, organized information on various countries and what to consider in expatriating there. My only complaint is that many smaller countries (particularly in the Middle East)were not included but the book overall is invaluable.

Informative, but poorly written. - danarama -
This book is filled with information, and the quality of the paper, printing, and binding is top notch. Unfortunately, the writer could have used a good editor. Writing is awkward, clumsy, and at time borders on illiterate. If you're searching for this type of information though, I wouldn't let that stop you from buying it.

Hi. I am actually in Bhutan as I write this. We are a "Lonely Planet" only household and travel consistently throughout the year. But, Lonely Plan for Bhutan on a Kindle is driving me crazy! Often "click on" does not go to the correct section. Maps are too small (even with Aa) to do much good. And you really need color for maps. Between a Rock and a Hard Place Review

Aron Ralston's book may well have saved my life and my husband's life in the same canyon system where he effected the most amazing and heroic of self rescues by amputating his own arm to escape BlueJohn Canyon. While as 'seasoned' citizens, neither my husband or I are into extreme sports like Ralston's canyoneering, much of the Canyonlands National Park (the rest of the National Park system, State and local parks and more)is readily accessible and restoring to the rest of us. We got lost, spent an overnight alone with a mountain lion, and in late morning found ourselves without water at the same spot that Ralston eventually found a Dutch family to help him. We relied on insight from his book to make wise decisions that -- along with the Artist in Resident who found us and the Park Ranger he called -- allow me to sit at my desk and write this review ten months later. The book is a good read in the safety of your own home, as story of inspiration on the metaphorically level for getting through difficult emotional problems so prevalent in our current political, economic, job situation and all the stresser of every day life. We all find ourselves between the proverbial rock and hard place and some of us may have to make financial, familial, and/or interpersonal decisions just as extreme as Ralston's decision to saw off his own arm with a generic multi-purpose tool. (I gave my husband a Swiss Army knife and a camelback (hydration system) for Christmas -- just in case our next stroll in the park goes as badly as the last.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place Overview

One of the most extraordinary survival stories ever told -- Aron Ralston's searing account of his six days trapped in one of the most remote spots in America, and how one inspired act of bravery brought him home.

It started out as a simple hike in the Utah canyonlands on a warm Saturday afternoon. For Aron Ralston, a twenty-seven-year-old mountaineer and outdoorsman, a walk into the remote Blue John Canyon was a chance to get a break from a winter of solo climbing Colorado's highest and toughest peaks. He'd earned this weekend vacation, and though he met two charming women along the way, by early afternoon he finally found himself in his element: alone, with just the beauty of the natural world all around him.

It was 2:41 P.M. Eight miles from his truck, in a deep and narrow slot canyon, Aron was climbing down off a wedged boulder when the rock suddenly, and terrifyingly, came loose. Before he could get out of the way, the falling stone pinned his right hand and wrist against the canyon wall.

And so began six days of hell for Aron Ralston. With scant water and little food, no jacket for the painfully cold nights, and the terrible knowledge that he'd told no one where he was headed, he found himself facing a lingering death -- trapped by an 800-pound boulder 100 feet down in the bottom of a canyon. As he eliminated his escape options one by one through the days, Aron faced the full horror of his predicament: By the time any possible search and rescue effort would begin, he'd most probably have died of dehydration, if a flash flood didn't drown him before that.

What does one do in the face of almost certain death? Using the video camera from his pack, Aron began recording his grateful good-byes to his family and friends all over the country, thinking back over a life filled with adventure, and documenting a last will and testament with the hope that someone would find it. (For their part, his family and friends had instigated a major search for Aron, the amazing details of which are also documented here for the first time.) The knowledge of their love kept Aron Ralston alive, until a divine inspiration on Thursday morning solved the riddle of the boulder. Aron then committed the most extreme act imaginable to save himself.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place -- a brilliantly written, funny, honest, inspiring, and downright astonishing report from the line where death meets life -- will surely take its place in the annals of classic adventure stories.

Excellent Read - Kelly Poovey - Maiden, NC
This was a well written and intriquing story. Nevermind that the fellow made a mistake. I forgive him of that. We all make mistakes. What was so compelling was just the story of how the human spirit can overcome dire circumstances. I recommend this to anyone who has the least interest in hiking, canyoneering, climbing and in general, outdoor sports of that nature. Once I got to about page 75 or so, it was very hard to put the book down.

Read the 1- 2-star reviews for what it's really like. - requin - Massachusetts
Do not be swayed by the 5-star reviews. This is a terrible book. Read the 1- and 2-star reviews; they are right on. This book is loaded with self-indulgent filler, 90% of which I skipped. Ralston is a terrible writer. He is egotistical and stupid getting into the situation he was in.

For a book that you won't be able to put down, try "Touching the Void" by Jon Simpson. There you have an example of an adventurer who's true, incredible story is compellingly told. Amazing story.

Great book! - Stealthhiker - CA USA
Written in the same gritty retrospective style used by Jon Krakauer in his first person account of the tragedy on Everest, "Into Thin Air", you will be spellbound by Ralston's description of his 6-day entrapment in Utah's Blue John Canyon. I read this book in a weekend. You will be amazed by this young climber's ingenuity, introspection and resolve to rescue himself. At times uncomfortably detailed (as when he describes how he had to amputate his hand), you will feel you are right there in that remote canyon with him during his ordeal. I used the book as the basis for a team building exercise with my staff at work. Ralston now does motivational speaking. Check out YouTube video..

Check Out Journeys of a Lifetime: 500 of the World's Greatest Trips for $24.47

Journeys of a Lifetime: 500 of the World's Greatest Trips Review

This is a wonderful coffee table book. I will not go into detail about what the nine different chapters contain, as many reviewers have already listed this information for you. What I will say concerning this book is that it is not an in-dept travel book at all, but that it does give you just enough information to wet your appetite to do more research on your own to find more specific information about trips which you may be interested in taking. It does give the reader some information on when to go, how long to plan on staying, highlights that you should make sure to see, and some inside tips. It also includes websites which the reader can go to in order to find more complete information on specific locations.

Also, you will find that this book is organized differently than many travel books. The chapter, as many have already noted, are organized by means of travel, not by geographic location. This means that if you are looking for information on a specific location, you will need to go to the index to find what you are looking for, but this should not present a problem, as the index is very detailed and complete. This book has some amazing photographs in it, as you would expect from a National Geographic book. Journeys of a Lifetime serves as more of a checklist, or wishlist for most of us, for places that you would like to visit and explore. It is well worth your time. I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 stars simply because I felt that it does not quite give the reader enough information on each location. Most locations is only accompanied by one large paragraph of text, along with the highlight information and a website. I would have liked to have seen just a little more information included for each journey. It is a very interesting and beautiful book and I highly recommend it if you enjoy traveling or learning about the world.

Great Price Lonely Planet for $13.70

Jordan (Country Guide) Review

My wife and I were only in jordan for 1 day, so we only used the Petra content in this guide. I found it extremely helpful, since we like to set out own pace and are not really the "guided tour" types. Reading about each of the sites was a nice rest from the heat, but i think my wife got tired of hearing me read :) Next trip we will definitely see more of the country and use the rest of the book!

Jordan for the Hard of Hearing! - Ms. J. Lewis - Cyprus and the Gulf
I was recently on a tour of Petra and Jordan and realised that since I do not hear well I would not be able to hear the Tour Guide giving his explanations. While we were at lunch in Jordan I used my Kindle to download the Jordan Lonely Planet Guide.

Two of us on the trip could not hear well, so we used my Kindle on our walks around. We found that the Guide itself was excellent, maps and diagrams were clearly downloaded and having a Kindle was an unexpected bonus.

I tried to do the same thing recently in Babylon in Iraq, and in Bahrain, but no Whispernet cover in either of these countries, so I have to try when I reach home.

The Lonely Planet Guides are easy to read, but detailed enough for immediate interest.

Useful, but not up to date - ImageHunter - USA
Like always, Lonely Planet has problems updating their travel guides, but generally it is an easy to navigate source of information. I noticed that the list of hotels in the Lonely Planet guidebooks has become very limited and we often had to search for accommodation after arrival as the listed hotels tend to be booked out first.

Quick-fix job with predictably dismal results - Traveller -
I have visited Jordan at least 20 times in the past few years, and I use the Lonely Planet and Rough Guide in parallel. Sadly, the 2009 Lonely Planet edition represents another low point on LP's downward quality spiral. I say this with sadness, as a longtime LP user whose bookshelf is full of dog-eared LP classics. The Jordan guide is just modestly updated from the 2006 edition. There are hard-to-justify omissions (Qasr Bshir), laughably outdated facts (such as the Amman municipal bus fares or the access route to Qasr al-Mushatta) und tons of information that is just plain wrong. The book reads like a sloppy, unenthusiastic desk update. From the content it is abundantly clear that the authors have not even bothered to read the country information in the discussion forum on LP's own website...! The only improvement is a two-page snapshot of scenic routes down to (or up from) the Dead Sea. I am forced to conclude with a single piece of advice: Buy the Rough Guide instead!

The Uncommercial Traveller Review

The Uncommercial Traveller Overview

The classic Dickens articles. According to Wikipedia: "Charles John Huffam Dickens, 1812 – 1870), pen-name "Boz", was one of the most popular English novelists of the Victorian era, as well as a vigorous social campaigner. Critics George Gissing and G. K. Chesterton championed Dickens's mastery of prose, his endless invention of unique, clever personalities, and his powerful social sensibilities, but fellow writers such as George Henry Lewes, Henry James, and Virginia Woolf faulted his work for sentimentality, implausible occurrences, and grotesque characterizations. The popularity of Dickens's novels and short stories has meant that they have never gone out of print Many of Dickens's novels first appeared in periodicals and magazines in serialized form—a popular format for fiction at the time—and, unlike many other authors who completed entire novels before serial production commenced, Dickens often composed his works in parts, in the order in which they were meant to appear. Such a practice lent his stories a particular rhythm, punctuated by one minor "cliffhanger" after another, to keep the public looking forward to the next instalment."

Arrived in perfect order and in the condition I expected it too. I would purchase again from this seller as it was on time!
A great deal considering the book store was WAY overpriced, so that purchase there was not going to happen. A good deal and perfect delivery!

No shipment; No Customer Service = Bad Review - DARREN MURPHY - GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA United States
Paid for a "2-Day" delivery shipment (a required college course book) that never arrived. Called their customer service (after waiting for 3 days) only to be told to be patient. What about reimbursing me for the shipping and handling cost?

Very frustrated!

Like I said in my title: No shipment; No Customer Service = Bad Review

Filled with errors and sloppiness. - BC - Texas
This book covers much of the essential GIS skills. The book's usefulness is nullified by a large number of errors and general sloppiness. If you are checking your answers (which are in the back of the book), take any answers with a grain of salt. In general, a succession of factual errors (such as miscalculating the number of feet in a mile), layout errors (diagrams not remotely close to where they are listed) and vague wording made me wonder if the book had been copy edited. I would strongly recommend the ESRI website and other ESRI publications over this book.

Arc GIS - Anthony J. Ledonne -
The book was brand new and still had CD...and still was in wrapping. So it was good. It arrived promptly as well.

City of Djinns: A Year in Delhi Review

The first thing that is incredibly interesting about this book is the way it is approached. To call it a travel book, I feel, is diminishing the many other aspects & experiences this book is about.

This book is kind of a diary of Dalrymple & wife's year in Delhi. And it is also a book of history scattered behind the sights, the people, & the culture. Dalrymple narrates compellingly, candidly, without biases & with plentiful humour. Stories abound - of the destitute but historically cultured 'old Delhi-wallahs' & the loutish Punjabi nouveau rich, of Anglo-Indians living in reminisce & poverty, of the Delhi eunuchs, of Dervishes that speak in parables, of partridge fights, of khalifas, of Balwinder Singh's buoyancy & lust, of Mr & Mrs Puri's idiosyncrasies.

And while you're drifting from one of these interludes to the other, you're taken centuries back to the Kingdom of Shah Jehan, Aurangzeb's treachery & network of spies, of incest in Royal Harems, of Englishmen who smoked hookahs - some who became Indian in their ways beyond recognition, some who continued their English ways, of the partition, of Tughlak's barbaric ways, of the refined mannerisms of a mirza during the Mughal period, of the Red Fort & what lies beneath.

Dalrymple is also an astute recorder of conversations. Some of the 'Indian English' that is spoken is in such sharp contrast to Dalrymple's speech, that you cannot help but get tickled. However, I do not think that Dalrymple's intention is mockery for there are plentiful other examples to the contrary.

I definitely learned & relearned a lot from this book. I also developed a sense of Delhi's history & a empathy for it's present. And I smiled a lot.

City of Djinns: A Year in Delhi Overview

Sparkling with irrepressible wit, City of Djinns peels back the layers of Delhi's centuries-old history, revealing an extraordinary array of characters along the way-from eunuchs to descendants of great Moguls. With refreshingly open-minded curiosity, William Dalrymple explores the seven "dead" cities of Delhi as well as the eighth city-today's Delhi. Underlying his quest is the legend of the djinns, fire-formed spirits that are said to assure the city's Phoenix-like regeneration no matter how many times it is destroyed. Entertaining, fascinating, and informative, City of Djinns is an irresistible blend of research and adventure.

Saved me a trip. - Dick Johnson - Oklahoma USA
I know I will never be able to visit India, so my "trip" comes from books. Dalrymple is a great tour guide. He took me places that I wouldn't have been able to visit even if I flew to Delhi today.

The people he met and described were as fascinating as the places he explored. This book is a combination of history, tourism, mini-biography, human interest, archeology and anthropology. The mix was well balanced and Dalrymple's writing ability made the entire book entertaining as well as educational.

Please do not let the age of this book dissuade you from reading it. Dalrymple's take on Delhi will still be worth the read for as long as people read.

My only gripe (worth a tenth of a star) was with the only map. Though nicely drawn by his wife, it was nearly useless. A more inclusive map would have added a tremendous amount to my enjoyment.

Read while visiting India - MGP - Heredia, Costa Rica
Dalrymple writes wonderfully. I read this while visiting Delhi, and it made me want to find all those places he described - many of which are off the beaten track. Dalrymple, a true historian, uncovers a whole other India beneath what regular tourists see. Both his discoveries as well as the reflections on his own life woven in are fascinating. I highly recommend this book, and I even more so recommend reading it while travelling in India, as it will fully allow you to appreciate "City of Djinns".

Excellent book to get a glimpse of Delhi's history - Shyam Kumar -
I loved reading all the three books by this author - The last Mughal, The White Mughal and City of Djinns. Unlike the other two, City of Djinns , is a little fast paced, more readable and is not as much detailed. If you have lived in Delhi and wondered about its history or a tourist heading for Delhi, you will look at things differently if you have read this book. The book is so readable that I would have liked more details especially Mughal and pre-Mughal history. Overall this is a great book.

Great Price for

The Reluctant Time Traveler Review

1. THE RELUCTANT TIME TRAVELER by Lynda Eymann is a Time Travel Romance/Fantasy. Although a unique theory of time travel is woven into the story, it is NOT Science Fiction.

2. This novel is definitely intended for a MATURE audience, but most readers of modern romance will NOT consider it to be "soft porn." If THE RELUCTANT TIME TRAVELER were a movie, it would be given a rating of PG-13.

3. Although no one can predict who will like any particular book, you will probably appreciate this story if you enjoy well-written, fast-paced novels with paranormal elements. To determine if THE RELUCTANT TIME TRAVELER will appeal to you, be sure to "Look Inside the Book" or download the FREE Kindle sample before you purchase it.

4. The current paperback edition of The Reluctant Time Traveler is a high quality 8 1/2" X 5 1/2" TRADE paperback--NOT a Mass Market paperback. The Kindle edition was formatted specifically for the Kindle and can be found at this link: The Reluctant Time Traveler.

The Reluctant Time Traveler Overview

With no memory of her former life in the 21st century, a woman in 17th century England is taken to market early one morning and auctioned off to the highest bidder. The mysterious gentleman that purchases her is a complete stranger, but something about him seems so familiar. Who is this harsh, forbidding man? Where has she seen him before? What does he want from her? If only she could remember. . . . Time traveler Susan Jaymes is about to remember everything, including a murder (or possibly two) that she would rather forget.

Entertaining Story - Tracy - South Carolina
This is an entertaining story about a mature woman, taking no risks in her life, who suddenly has her destiny as a time traveler thrust, unwelcomly, upon her. The writing is a bit amateurish, but the story itself is innovative and creative. All in all I kept reading it because I did care about the characters and I wanted to know how it turned out. I don't know that I will bother with the sequel, but, in general, I enjoyed the time that I spent in the world that Ms. Eymann created.

An Enjoyable FANTASY--NOT Sci-Fi - Maggie D. -
This book isn't science fiction. It's FANTASY. There isn't an iota of science or science fiction in it. Most of the story takes place in the 19th century. There's a wonderful hero, a spooky setting, and lots of lightning, but there isn't a machine or scientific theory in sight.

"Her pig of a husband" is a phrase which occurs only a few times in the first chapter. It seemed like an appropriate--and funny--term of "endearment" to me. It certainly wasn't used so many times that it irritated or frustrated me.

I loved "The Reluctant Time Traveler." I liked the heroine, adored the hero, and enjoyed the unusual storyline. I think anyone who likes time travel novels with old-fashioned Gothic settings and romance will enjoy this book as much as I did.

The Reluctant Time Traveler - Clara - Hillsboro, OR USA
I don't quite understand all the great reviews of this book. I was so excited to read this. If I read "my pig of a husband" one more time I'll rip my hair out. Couldn't the author thing of something else to say? Unfortunately is seems a little science fiction for my taste.

Can not even finish this book...

Check Out Atlas of the World for $50.40

Atlas of the World Review

High quality and much entertaining world atlas. You can spend lots of hours on it. The presentations are clear and easy to follow. What's lacking is the depth of details of the maps. This atlas loses out to those atlases like National Geographic, Times and Hammond which show better details of every location comparatively.
Having mentioned that, nothing beats the price of this atlas - the most cost-effective atlas in its class.

Atlas of the World Overview

The only world atlas updated annually, guaranteeing that users will find the most current geographic information, Oxford's Atlas of the World is the most authoritative atlas on the market. Full of crisp, clear cartography of urban areas and virtually uninhabited landscapes around the globe, the Atlas is filled with maps of cities and regions at carefully selected scales that give a striking view of the Earth's surface. Opening with world statistics and a colorful, instructive 48-page Introduction to World Geography--beautifully illustrated with tables and graphs--this acclaimed resource provides details on numerous topics of geographic significance, such as climate change, biodiversity, energy, and landforms.

The popular satellite image section has been refreshed with stunning new images of Denver (clearly showing how the natural barrier of the Rockies affects population spread), Kabul (which shows in vivid detail how that city is encircled by mountains), and Port-au-Prince, Haiti. All census information and country descriptions have been updated to reflect the latest developments around the world. Completely new to this edition is a section titled "Will the World Run Out of Food?," which discusses world food distribution and how this has changed rapidly in recent years, based on data collected by Rothamsted Research, the oldest research station in the world. A new section on world shipping piracy explores the rise in piracy, especially off the coast of Somalia, and the effects on the World Food Programme. Maps throughout have been updated to include such new features as the World Financial Center (the world's third tallest building) in Shanghai, new international airports in India and South Africa, administrative changes in Iceland, Bulgaria, and elsewhere, new national parks in Denmark, and many more.

Providing the finest global coverage available, the Atlas of the World is not only the best-selling volume of its size and price, but also the benchmark by which all other atlases are measured.

Atlas of the World Specifications

The only world atlas updated annually, the fifteenth edition of Oxford's Atlas of the World offers exceptional value at a reasonable price. Full of crisp, clear cartography, it contains maps of 69 cities and nearly 100 different regions around the globe as well as striking satellite views of the Earth's surface.
