Rick Steves' Eastern Europe Review
After careful research - then more research - I used this book and the Lonely Planet Eastern Europe book; to travel for 2 weeks in eastern europe, backpacking/hostels style. It was great, and helped me to navigate areas, museums, and generally get around. The hotel/hostel information is accurate - but make sure you check current feedback about places to stay, circle those in your book & off you go!! - Go explore!!

Whilst politically it was called Eastern Europe (or Eastern Block, rather), geographically it's Central Europe. The CIA World Factbook describes the following countries as located in:
Central Europe: Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia. Romania can be included in Eastern Europe in the Cold War context, but is commonly referred to as belonging to South-eastern Europe or Central Europe.
Eastern Europe: Belarus, Estonia[13], Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova and Ukraine. Romania can be included in Eastern Europe in the Cold War context, but is commonly referred to as belonging to South-eastern Europe or Central Europe.
Also, the correct spelling is 'Habsburgs', not 'Hapsburgs' - drives me crazy when apparently learned people keep making and perpetuating mistakes like this. Yes, the pronunciation sounds like [haps], but spelt with a 'b' instead of a 'p'.
