Prague (Eyewitness Travel Guides) Review

I love the Eyewitness series because the pictures and illustrations are both beautiful and informative. Also, I'm a visual learner so they are always appreciated. This book is no exception. If at any point I was confused about what I was looking at or where exactly I was, the images helped orientate me.

It took a little while to fully understand the maps of the different neighborhoods of Prague, but that may be because the city is not on a grid system. By the end of a week in the city, I only had to consult and not study the maps to find where I was headed. In any case, if you have the time to read through the book prior to opening up the maps while you're trying to navigate the streets, you'll greatly benefit. The Metro map is very helpful, too.

I found that the historical info provided for the major sites was thorough. Depending on your taste for information (or the time you have to spend at certain sites), it may be enough to warrant not renting an audio guide.

If this book doesn't get you excited about a trip to Prague nothing will. The pictures and info are great. Will be going in a few weeks and can't wait to put it to use.

We just returned from Prague and got real value from this book. The information on the sights was perfect for us. It helped prioritize our list of things to see, explained the layout of the city, and gave good background information. The book's emphasis on visual communication works better for me than the traditional purely narrative guidebook. The book also contains good street level maps for the central parts of the city. The walking tours were great.

The information on restaurants, however, was weak. It is out of date. I gather that the same is true of the hotel information but did not use it for that purpose. Rely on the web for up to date restaurant information.

Like all Eyewitness Travel Guides, Prague is no exception. The history and culture are covered at the beginning of the book. Detailed town maps and points of interest are contained throughout. At the end of the book you'll find common terms, restaurant tips, and other useful information for navigating Prague. I always use Eyewitness Travel Guides when I travel outside the US.
