Jordan (Country Guide) Review

My wife and I were only in jordan for 1 day, so we only used the Petra content in this guide. I found it extremely helpful, since we like to set out own pace and are not really the "guided tour" types. Reading about each of the sites was a nice rest from the heat, but i think my wife got tired of hearing me read :) Next trip we will definitely see more of the country and use the rest of the book!

Jordan for the Hard of Hearing! - Ms. J. Lewis - Cyprus and the Gulf
I was recently on a tour of Petra and Jordan and realised that since I do not hear well I would not be able to hear the Tour Guide giving his explanations. While we were at lunch in Jordan I used my Kindle to download the Jordan Lonely Planet Guide.

Two of us on the trip could not hear well, so we used my Kindle on our walks around. We found that the Guide itself was excellent, maps and diagrams were clearly downloaded and having a Kindle was an unexpected bonus.

I tried to do the same thing recently in Babylon in Iraq, and in Bahrain, but no Whispernet cover in either of these countries, so I have to try when I reach home.

The Lonely Planet Guides are easy to read, but detailed enough for immediate interest.



















Useful, but not up to date - ImageHunter - USA
Like always, Lonely Planet has problems updating their travel guides, but generally it is an easy to navigate source of information. I noticed that the list of hotels in the Lonely Planet guidebooks has become very limited and we often had to search for accommodation after arrival as the listed hotels tend to be booked out first.






Quick-fix job with predictably dismal results - Traveller -
I have visited Jordan at least 20 times in the past few years, and I use the Lonely Planet and Rough Guide in parallel. Sadly, the 2009 Lonely Planet edition represents another low point on LP's downward quality spiral. I say this with sadness, as a longtime LP user whose bookshelf is full of dog-eared LP classics. The Jordan guide is just modestly updated from the 2006 edition. There are hard-to-justify omissions (Qasr Bshir), laughably outdated facts (such as the Amman municipal bus fares or the access route to Qasr al-Mushatta) und tons of information that is just plain wrong. The book reads like a sloppy, unenthusiastic desk update. From the content it is abundantly clear that the authors have not even bothered to read the country information in the discussion forum on LP's own website...! The only improvement is a two-page snapshot of scenic routes down to (or up from) the Dead Sea. I am forced to conclude with a single piece of advice: Buy the Rough Guide instead!

Paid for a "2-Day" delivery shipment (a required college course book) that never arrived. Called their customer service (after waiting for 3 days) only to be told to be patient. What about reimbursing me for the shipping and handling cost?

Filled with errors and sloppiness. - BC - Texas
This book covers much of the essential GIS skills. The book's usefulness is nullified by a large number of errors and general sloppiness. If you are checking your answers (which are in the back of the book), take any answers with a grain of salt. In general, a succession of factual errors (such as miscalculating the number of feet in a mile), layout errors (diagrams not remotely close to where they are listed) and vague wording made me wonder if the book had been copy edited. I would strongly recommend the ESRI website and other ESRI publications over this book.

City of Djinns: A Year in Delhi Review

The first thing that is incredibly interesting about this book is the way it is approached. To call it a travel book, I feel, is diminishing the many other aspects & experiences this book is about.

This book is kind of a diary of Dalrymple & wife's year in Delhi. And it is also a book of history scattered behind the sights, the people, & the culture. Dalrymple narrates compellingly, candidly, without biases & with plentiful humour. Stories abound - of the destitute but historically cultured 'old Delhi-wallahs' & the loutish Punjabi nouveau rich, of Anglo-Indians living in reminisce & poverty, of the Delhi eunuchs, of Dervishes that speak in parables, of partridge fights, of khalifas, of Balwinder Singh's buoyancy & lust, of Mr & Mrs Puri's idiosyncrasies.

And while you're drifting from one of these interludes to the other, you're taken centuries back to the Kingdom of Shah Jehan, Aurangzeb's treachery & network of spies, of incest in Royal Harems, of Englishmen who smoked hookahs - some who became Indian in their ways beyond recognition, some who continued their English ways, of the partition, of Tughlak's barbaric ways, of the refined mannerisms of a mirza during the Mughal period, of the Red Fort & what lies beneath.

Dalrymple is also an astute recorder of conversations. Some of the 'Indian English' that is spoken is in such sharp contrast to Dalrymple's speech, that you cannot help but get tickled. However, I do not think that Dalrymple's intention is mockery for there are plentiful other examples to the contrary.

I definitely learned & relearned a lot from this book. I also developed a sense of Delhi's history & a empathy for it's present. And I smiled a lot.

Saved me a trip. - Dick Johnson - Oklahoma USA
I know I will never be able to visit India, so my "trip" comes from books. Dalrymple is a great tour guide. He took me places that I wouldn't have been able to visit even if I flew to Delhi today.

The people he met and described were as fascinating as the places he explored. This book is a combination of history, tourism, mini-biography, human interest, archeology and anthropology. The mix was well balanced and Dalrymple's writing ability made the entire book entertaining as well as educational.

Please do not let the age of this book dissuade you from reading it. Dalrymple's take on Delhi will still be worth the read for as long as people read.

My only gripe (worth a tenth of a star) was with the only map. Though nicely drawn by his wife, it was nearly useless. A more inclusive map would have added a tremendous amount to my enjoyment.



Read while visiting India - MGP - Heredia, Costa Rica
Dalrymple writes wonderfully. I read this while visiting Delhi, and it made me want to find all those places he described - many of which are off the beaten track. Dalrymple, a true historian, uncovers a whole other India beneath what regular tourists see. Both his discoveries as well as the reflections on his own life woven in are fascinating. I highly recommend this book, and I even more so recommend reading it while travelling in India, as it will fully allow you to appreciate "City of Djinns".



Excellent book to get a glimpse of Delhi's history - Shyam Kumar -
I loved reading all the three books by this author - The last Mughal, The White Mughal and City of Djinns. Unlike the other two, City of Djinns , is a little fast paced, more readable and is not as much detailed. If you have lived in Delhi and wondered about its history or a tourist heading for Delhi, you will look at things differently if you have read this book. The book is so readable that I would have liked more details especially Mughal and pre-Mughal history. Overall this is a great book.

Entertaining Story - Tracy - South Carolina
This is an entertaining story about a mature woman, taking no risks in her life, who suddenly has her destiny as a time traveler thrust, unwelcomly, upon her. The writing is a bit amateurish, but the story itself is innovative and creative. All in all I kept reading it because I did care about the characters and I wanted to know how it turned out. I don't know that I will bother with the sequel, but, in general, I enjoyed the time that I spent in the world that Ms. Eymann created.



An Enjoyable FANTASY--NOT Sci-Fi - Maggie D. -
This book isn't science fiction. It's FANTASY. There isn't an iota of science or science fiction in it. Most of the story takes place in the 19th century. There's a wonderful hero, a spooky setting, and lots of lightning, but there isn't a machine or scientific theory in sight.

"Her pig of a husband" is a phrase which occurs only a few times in the first chapter. It seemed like an appropriate--and funny--term of "endearment" to me. It certainly wasn't used so many times that it irritated or frustrated me.

I loved "The Reluctant Time Traveler." I liked the heroine, adored the hero, and enjoyed the unusual storyline. I think anyone who likes time travel novels with old-fashioned Gothic settings and romance will enjoy this book as much as I did.
