Fodor's Cape Cod, Nantucket & Martha's Vineyard, 28th Edition (Fodor's Gold Guides) Review

My family used this book as we planned our trip to Cape Cod and Nantuckett. We were delighted with all of the recommendations. Though we stayed in Hyannis we traveled and visited towns across the Cape and took a day trip to Nantuckett. We visited several (4-5) 'Fodor's Choice' restaurants of various price levels and were delighted with what we found! We also tried out several beaches based on Fodor's recomendations and our four year old had an excellent time. I would suggest this book for anyone traveling and visiting the area.

The Short Bus: A Journey Beyond Normal Review

This book was a requirement for a graduate course I took on learning disabilities. The teacher had a copy on hand for us to thumb through the first day of class. After just reading a couple of paragraphs here and there I couldn't let it go. I had to borrow the book that night and devoured it immediately. I bought a copy anyway because I think that all adults who consider themselves educated could benefit from Mooney's writing. I learned more in this text than I had in dozens of expensive textbooks. My copy is worn from being lent out to friends, colleagues, and family.

Mooney does not simply teach the symptoms of disability. He teaches interaction, empathy, and most of all that as with all things a sense of humor is a must. I appreciated his tone and found comfort in the idea that while things can seem heartbreaking, it is always okay to laugh. I am beginning my journey in the field of special education. When finding my interactions with students awkward and scary, I can open this book to nearly any section and find insight and support. The people that Mooney discovers on his path are what makes our world colorful, imaginative, and fun.

This book is a must have for any educator, family of a person battling with "normal", or anyone that considers himself a well rounded human being. Buy it! You'll be better off because of it.

A must read - Mike -
I had the pleasure of hearing mr. Mooney address the freshman class at university of Idaho this week. His book is the "common read" selection for this year for U of I. I read his book and was very glad my son is attending a school that is supporting the ideas expressed in this excellent story. Please read this book. It will let give you the gift of a new perspective on education, human dignity and how we as a society define normal (and the price we pay for that ridgid definition).

Horrible, Mean Spirited Book - Alyssa D. Eldredge - Idaho Falls, ID
This book is required reading for my university. Otherwise, I'm not sure I would have gotten past the first twenty pages.

What I thought would be a book delving into the psychology of "being normal", it turns out that it far more closely resembles an exceptionally long angst-fest. The author spends pages upon pages denouncing the special ed system based upon bad experiences some children (himself included) have had while simultaneously lambasting integrated classrooms because the special needs students get singled out or anxious.

At one point, the narrator bemoans the fact that a young ADD student who is very good at soccer has to have special classes in the summer to help him to read better. Though the narrator said just a sentence or two prior that the classes had shown to be very effective, he thinks that the boy's time would be better playing soccer. I'm sorry, Mr. Mooney, but reading is a necessary life skill; soccer isn't.

There were just so many instances when I wanted to just yell and the book and throw it across the room. The "characters" all swear like sailors, for one thing. I don't think I could open the book and NOT find an instance of the F-bomb on the page I was looking at. Most of that anger was directed toward society and "normal"ness in general. Another of these annoying places I found was when Mooney took a break from special ed kids and spent several pages talking about a transvestite called "Cookie." What does that have to do with "The Short Bus"? Are you trying to tell me to be more tolerant of tranvestites? It's one thing to discriminate against mental diseases/defects that the person can't help. It's another to avoid a heavyset man who chooses to wear fishnets and pink fluffy robes.

The author/narrator really began to get on my nerves after a while. Over the course of the book, he drinks heavily, he throws around curses like they were free Skittles, often denouncing "normal" with them. At one point, the man gets drunk, gets a mohawk, puts on a sarong, and steals a bike and rides it into the desert. No, I'm not kidding. He officially lost all credibility he had with me at that point.

This book was very hard for me to finish because it made me so angry. Mooney didn't suggest any kind of solution for special education problems that he began to address and instead blames society and has a sour feeling for normal people. There were no new insights from this book. It was a "pity-me" ride across the country. I kept on asking, "What's the POINT, Mooney?!"

I never got a reply.

Great book for teachers and parents of special needs students. Actually maybe it is the general ed. teachers who need to read it. It gives you a very special view of what those kids face everyday and hopefully helps you see beyond the disability to the heart of the individual!

Check Out Ulysses

Ulysses Review

Okay, this is clearly the most thought out book I have ever read. You go through it, and you pick out any part and say, why must he be so wordy about two people getting a Guinness, but you realize that he is putting all the mythical overload into trivial events, and that while it is absurd, it is true. If you can read this book in a class, that would be best, but at least be sure to have a complete guide so that you can get some of the allusions. You don't need to catch EVERYthing. It is very show-offy, a bit like Joyce is trying to just pack every single piece of information he's ever picked up into this novel. This can be annoying, but it is also amazing. And I think that was his point, to describe his world and everything in it, through the story of a common man, whose heroism so deeply embedded in him is overlooked.

Ulysses Overview

Ulysses, a Modernist reconstruction of Homer's epic The Odyssey, was James Joyce's first epic-length novel. The Irish writer had already published a collection of short stories entitled Dubliners, as well as A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, the semi-autobiographical novella, whose protagonist, Stephen Dedalus, reappears in Ulysses. Immediately hailed as a work of genius, Ulysses is still considered to be the greatest of Joyce's literary accomplishments and his first two works anticipated what was to come in Ulysses.

This edition contains extensive overviews of both the author and the novel.

Best cheap edition, w/comparison - C. R. Butler -
I downloaded the previews of all 50+ ebook editions of Ulysses and wrote short reviews for all of them, but Amazon rejected all but 10, so I lost a lot of the data I was going to use for a final comparison. But among the versions I have records for, this one looks like the best.

It's a scan of the controversial 'corrected' Gabler edition, with an 18-chapter ToC and decent italics. It also includes Wikipedia articles on Ulysses and Joyce as frontmatter.

Among the rest, the only non-Gabler editions I've spotted are Ulysses: (A Modern Library E-Book) (its ToC only has the 3 'books') and the Penguin Ulysses.

This is an excellent account of the 5 women that reached the summit of K2 as well as their extensive backgrounds. Each of the women was from a different walk of life, from women who were nationally sponsored to a house wife who had to live out of her car and bring her children to base camp with her. But one thing was present in all the women, the desire to climb mountains and the draw that the mountains had when they went back to their "normal" lives. The author's research is apparent in the numerous sources for her accounts of the lives of these women, from climbing partners to children, journals to radio transmissions, her writing is filled with accuracy. But this is also an adventure story that you won't want to put down. While you already know the outcome, you want to learn how these 5 women lost their lives to the mountains. An excellent adventure story.

A Wonderful Book! - G. FitzGerald - Springfield, MA
I've read over a dozen books on high-altitude climbing in the past six months, some wonderful stories -- classics and newer releases, but this one made my heart ache. I couldn't wait to get back to it, and I hated for it to end. Great history, great biography, beautifully written. I shed more than one tear for these brave, unique women, all of whom, it seemed, deserved much more of life than they got. This is a wonderful book, even if you have no interest in high-altitude climbing or about K2.

In the end, you could feel Jennifer Jordan's genuine sorrow for her subjects, and you want to share her pain and give her a hug for her labors. The best written mountaineering story of all I've read.



Inspirational - Anthony M. Frasca - East Setauket, NY USA
Savage Summit is essentially a biography of women mountaineers who have climbed K2. A number of world famous female mountaineers are celebrated extensively including Wanda Rutkiewicz, Chantal Mauduit, Alison Hargreaves, Julie Tullis and Liliane Barrard. The book was extremely well-written and extensively researched. It see-saws from uplifting to grievously sad. All the women met their deaths in the mountains between ages 33 and 49 leaving a trail of grieving parents, siblings, friends, lovers, husbands and children. Jordan captures their emotions, as well as her own, in a page turning exhibition of outstanding writing.
Bravo!

Robert Young Pelton is the dark brother of Rick Steves, and the book he has written is not really a traveler's guide, since you would have to be crazy to follow in his footsteps. Who on earth would really want to visit god forsaken countries like Sudan or North Korea? Rather, it is a showcase for Pelton's snappy, amusing prose about countries of the world whose citizens have become largely unhinged, either through religious extremism, poverty, military dictatorships, or harsh and morally reprehensible governments. It's a pretty amazing survey of all that can go wrong when the perennial bad boys of the world go on a crusade or a rampage. The murder and mayhem that Pelton documents inundates a large percentage of human beings on this planet, mostly ordinary innocent people trying to cope with the lousy hand that life has dealt them. It is important for the affluent and complacent West understand the daily misery they endure. That might be the one reason you might want to visit say, Bosnia or Chechnya, to be humbled a bit. It's all here: the kidnappings, the massacres, the human slave trade, the insane greed and utter disregard for human life that plagues so much of the world, and much more. There is scant mention of Somalia, possibly because it is a place so awful that even Pelton fears to tread there. All in all, a depressing read that Pelton tries to liven up with a smart aleck sense of humor that is sometimes cynical and cruel. I would recommend this book especially to modern day missionaries and other professional do-gooders to show them what a gargantuan task it will be to bring even a sliver of moral comprehension to these places...including the United States of America.

(This book needs a serious update. Five years is an eternity in today's fast paced world.)

Although I did a lot of traveling through questionable places overseas, it was before I had this book. D'oh!

So for me personally, I have read and enjoyed it for entertainment value--and, so as not to minimize the book's value, to educate myself--rather than as an in-country guide. Some people have questioned the accuracy of the information. I cannot speak to that, but obviously situations in some of these, shall we say, less frequented destinations change on a daily basis, as political or military winds blow. So even having a good guide does not preclude information from becoming quickly outdated, and it's each suicidal traveler to his or her own.

To be sure, this is real Soldier of Fortune stuff. Robert Young Pelton hits all of the world's hot spots, and there is an edge of sensationalism to the writing. After all, who else other than journalists, mercenaries, and diplomats want to (or for that matter, even need to) go to most of these places? At least the disclaimer includes the warning that, "our advice is more likely to kill you than save your life." (!)

Still, I have never seen so much difficult-to-find information presented in one book before. It's essentially an adventure travel guide combined with the CIA World FactBook. I would not be surprised if intelligence operatives and field agents from our own government's agencies are issued with DP.

I own the second edition (1997). Am I the only one who thinks the photo on the cover of RYP looks EXACTLY like Harvey Keitel with a moustache?? I suppose the world has gotten even dangerous (at least for Americans) since 9/11, so presumably newer editions reflect this.

Pelton gives who, what and whens of the location in discussion. A must read for anyone suffering from wanderlust. Could be a good book for those that question the validity of the media

Lucky you. Having found this book, buy it before they come to their senses and double the price.

Just back from a 2 month tour of the Southwest, this guide was indispensable. Together with the New Mexico version, we were able to visit 100 sites in 65 days, and get 1000's of incredible images. We had never even heard of most of the places before reading these books. Even with 19 days of snow, we were able to put ourselves in several hyper-photogenic spots every day. And yet, I doubt we've seen half of places Laurent describes. For a few shekels, you get intimate knowledge of the region with decades of practical experience.

But that's just us. We wanted to travel and hike and photograph everyday. These guides hit that sweet spot. If you don't want to get out of the car, or just want to shop, or are looking for the best opportunities for fine dinning, or like comfortable museums, or looking to save pennies RVing parking lots, this book is not for you. To get the most out of it, you'll also need well worn hiking boots, a light backpack, water bottles, navi gear, a walking stick, lots of camera gear, flashlights, emergency gear, a high clearance vehicle, a high-limit credit card, good legs, and a variety of hats for sun and cold. Camping equipment also helps, but we like showers and beds. And that's not all. You will mostly need enormous amounts of energy, courage, desire, and time.

Yes, it takes courage and perseverance to follow this author's footsteps. If you want to see the show, you have to be the show. We hit the limit and backed out of one of his suggested hikes (Cathedral Wash), fearing for our lives. We were abducted by Indians, rescued from the desert at night by a rancher, and met countless wonderful people on the trails. We lost a tire, a windshield, and a body panel on the car. Those are just a few of the hundreds of incredible stories.

Practically speaking, it is a sturdy, well bound book, and thank goodness for that. We spent hours everyday for weeks with each book, and they got tossed around in the car and packs.

Laurent is highly enjoyable to read in the planning phase of your trip, and very enthusiastic. Sometimes too enthusiastic. When he mentions that something might require caution or is "perfectly safe," you'd better hold on for your life or back away. To get the picture, you have to drive through the stream, squeeze through the crack, and get comfortable with 500 foot cliffs.

As others have mentioned, his travel directions are capricious. This is typical for the Southwest. They don't want to squash your sense of adventure. Seriously. So it can be difficult to follow along at home. Once you are en route, he always gives you enough to get there. We bookmarked his one-little-map-per-book, and found the uncluttered, schematic view very useful.

One last word on coded messages--when Laurent mentions that you might want to spend some extra time exploring an area beyond his specific recommendations, plan on extending your stay and get busy. He's hinting that something spectacular is lurking just beyond the view of the tourists. Talk to the locals, trade info with other hikers, and explore some of those Forest Service roads. We found prehistoric pottery shards, rock art, natural and cultural wonders, and even a cave dwelling that nobody knew about. How can you beat that for adventure?

This book will get you going. I'm buying his Utah guide right now.

A solid resource for photographers! - Kate Burns - Oregon
I purchased this book in preparation for a photography trip to Arizona, and it has been a solid resource regarding places to go and when to go there.

I wish they had maps within the body of the book, but they do let you know that those aren't included. So, it wasn't a surprise to me.

This book will save you a lot of time looking for photo angles and locations. It could have more detailed info, but considering the alternatives this book is very good.
